A COMMITMENT TO FRESHNESS AND QUALITY HAS RICE ‘N SPICE PATRONS COMING BACK FOR MORE.

Since 1992, this family-run restaurant has offered one of the richest and most delicious combinations of exotic dishes in the city. They are known for their long line-ups thanks to the family’s unwavering commitment to freshness and quality. Flavours range from Sri-Lankan curries to Mediterranean shawarma and many unusual South East Asian dishes. Grinding and mixing their own spices for freshness, each curry is made with a unique twist on the original recipe. No food preservatives or M.S.G. are used and the menu includes a wide variety of 100% vegan and gluten-free items. After launching a Yaletown location in 2012, the family is eagerly anticipating opening this fall in Harbour Centre.

INTRODUCING THE REDEVELOPMENT’S INTERIOR DESIGN TEAM: SSDG INTERIORS INC.

When Harbour Centre decided to upgrade the food court, SSDG Interiors was brought on board to lead the interior design strategy. With almost three decades of related retail and hospitality experience, SSDG Interiors was the perfect team to lead the design of the redevelopment.

SSDG developed a plan to realize Harbour Centre’s potential of being an urban, contemporary neighbourhood gathering space. Warm and dynamic colors and materials were chosen to welcome visitors to a food court experience that engages the five senses with color, lighting, texture and form. They called for areas of the floor around escalators and stairs to be removed to open up the space and increase visibility and light transmittance between floors. Lounge areas for socializing were also integral to the planning, as was efficient increased seating and washroom capacity. Fresh colors, high ceilings, increased natural light and ventilation, sustainable initiatives and improved wayfinding will all create a space that emphasizes wellbeing and accessibility.

“The changes are designed to enhance the complex, making it brighter, more welcoming, and easier to navigate. Our vision is to retain the heritage of the building but to offer an improved shopping and dining experience for our customers.”
– Norman Pearl, Senior Vice President of Polaris Realty Canada Limited

WHO TOOK MY LUNCH? FOOD COURT NOW CLOSED AND CONSTRUCTION IS UNDERWAY.

Harbour Centre is truly a Landmark in Motion! The old food court is now closed and the first phase of the redevelopment project is well underway. Behind the hoarding, the work to bring you a fresh new food court commenced April 1.

Here’s some of the progress that has been made so far:

• All the furniture has been removed, and existing walls and ceilings have been torn down to make more room for an open themed food court. Void spaces around the escalator and staircase areas are being enlarged to improve sightlines and make the space feel more inviting.

• Electrical and mechanical demolition is underway which includes disconnection and removal of unused equipment, pipes, and wiring.

• Plans to achieve a higher ceiling in the food court space are ongoing. The higher ceiling will enhance the suspended ceiling accents that will be installed later in the project. The ceiling accents, in wave and cloud shapes will provide interest, playfulness, and fluidity to the space.

What exciting elements can you expect to see in the new food court?

• Variations on seating types will provide patrons with different seating options. Complimentary WIFI and electronic power sources for communication devices will be built in to the seats for convenience. Digital flat screens will be installed to provide information, entertainment and a better patron experience.

• Vancouver’s iconic views will be incorporated into some of the walls creating a sense of being outdoors, while experiencing the warmth and comfort of the indoors. Vibrant colors and a mix of wall textures will definitely bring freshness and fun to the space.

• Digital wayfinding signs will be incorporated in to the centre to provide easy navigation for patrons. In addition, enlarged washrooms with modern fixtures, accessible restroom and baby change areas will be made available to cater to our patron’s needs.

• Modern recycling systems with organized labels and built-in tray holders will be made available, improving waste management within the food court.
